[Who decides what marriage is? Who is eligible to marry? Is it a matter of public opinion or political policy making? Absolutely not. God is the author of marriage, and his word regulates the divine arrangement. Jason Jackson considers the topic in light of recent developments. ]
Most people believe that marriage is the union of a man and a woman. According to a national Wirthlin poll by Alliance for Marriage last March, 62% of the people polled agreed that marriage is a heterosexual commitment; 26% disagreed; 12% didn't know. Thirty-seven states have passed marriage legislation, defining the relationship as that which is between a man and a woman. By way of contrast, no state has legalized same-sex marriages. But listen closely, and you may hear the winds of change.
The Massachusetts Supreme Court may rule soon (i.e., summer of 2003) on the issue, legalizing gay marriages. The controversy was recently brought into the spotlight when the U.S. Supreme Court struck down anti-sodomy laws of Texas.
Morality is on the decline and the divine institution of marriage suffers. But marriage is not defined by opinion polls. It is not recreated by judges. If Abraham had polled Sodom, what would the numbers have shown? God polled Sodom and not even ten righteous souls were found. It was a tolerant and "gay" society, concerning which Jude reported, "Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire" (Jude 7, ESV). It was a tolerant and "gay" society. From the heavenly Supreme Court Justice, we learn that morality is not defined by the majority.
Morality is absolute, and mutual consent does not make sin right. Mutual consent may make it legal, but that does not make it morally acceptable. Consent has become the only reason necessary for legitimizing a sexual act at least in the minds of some. It is, however, a gross perversion of God's design for human intimacy. God created human beings in his own image, and he created them male and female. Furthermore, a man and a woman who are eligible to marry may enter the divinely created relationship in which sexual activity finds its purpose, is honorable, and is right (Gen. 1:26-27; 2:21-25; Matt. 19:9; Rom. 7:2-3; Heb. 13:4).
Homosexuals, and their sympathizers, are not content with saying, "This is the way we will live, and we don't care if you go along with it." No, they want to push their moral perversion on all people. They want legitimate status. They want financial benefits. They want wrong to be considered right, and homosexual-rights groups will not rest until this immorality is given universal consent.
What is right matters! What is moral matters! God created marriage and placed within it the honorable expression of love and intimacy. We do not have to cave in to the pressure of a godless society. There is no virtue in looking like Sodom, and many have failed to learn the lessons from the annihilated city of antiquity, and the souls that inhabited that region suffer for their rebellion against their Creator and Redeemer.

One lived because he was afraid to die no hope inspired his soul;
Life in this world was all he sought; he had no other goal.
He had no thought of Hell's dark depths or Heaven's glory bright,
He stepped from this life's lowly scene into eternal night.
Two died because he was afraid to live. Life's heavy burden's store
Weighed greatly on his weary soul till he wanted life no more.
He took the life he could not bear and snuffed the candle out.
And walked death's valley, dark and deep, because of fear and doubt.
Three lived because he sought life's hope and thought of God's great love,
And treasured all Christ's blessings here and Heaven's home above.
And when the death call bade his soul to Heaven's golden shore,
He went to live with God above in peace forevermore.

"FRIENDS AND FAMILY DAY -- OCTOBER 26"
Many of us are just looking for an opportunity to say something to someone about coming to services with us. Perhaps we're a bit bashful or fearful, but this date is set in such a way that we should all be excited to talk it up. Unless you have no friends and no family, you should be able to fill a good sized page with names of individuals you would like to ask to attend. If you have no friends, this is a good way to make some. What better way to introduce yourself to a neighbor or work associate.
Please mark that day on your calendar and determine to do everything in your power to stay in town and support this great effort. We should be able to see 500 in services that Sunday.
Many years ago I heard brother Batsell Barrett Baxter tell of a visit he made to a northern city where the Herald of Truth television program was being broadcast. He and the local minister went out to the houses around the building to meet the people and invite them to services and to watch the broadcast. Right next to the building they spoke with a man who said he had lived next door to that church building for many years (he told the number) and that this was the first time he had been personally invited to attend the services there. I'm sure the local preacher felt some embarrassment, but I'm also sure that many of us would be just as guilty.
Using the title of one of Wendell Winkler's sermons preached in a revival where I served as minister in Oklahoma many years ago, "Wake The Town, And Tell The People!" We simply must make people aware of the saving Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, and let them know that this church is interested in their souls.
"Evangelize" is the watchword that we must use to move our people into action. It's time to start talking with our friends about studying the Bible. It's time to use our influence to cause others to want to talk to us about what has made such a difference in our lives. We've not practiced New Testament Christianity until we have practiced evangelism. Paul "kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have showed you, and have taught you publicly, and from house to house, (Acts 20:20).

Today is the day of beginning
To do the best I can,
For I never shall have this moment
Or be given this chance again.
Today is the day of beginning
To be what I want to portray,
For the rest of my life will be molded
By the action I take today.
Today is the day of beginning
Of eternity for me.
In the Book of Life is my record,
How shall it look to Thee?
