William Ross Methvin


William Ross Methvin, born July 13, 1804 in Wilkinson County, Georgia was the oldest son of Thomas Methvin. His first wife was named Elizabeth, born about 1818 in Georgia and she died between 1850 and 1860. The 1850 Twiggs County Georgia Census shows the following on page178. 84th Division taken the 30th day of September

William married 2nd. Cornelia A. Horne on November 24, 1858 as evidenced by the following: "Marriages and Obituraries from the Macon Messenger 1818-1865" p501; December 8, 1858; Married on the evening of the 24th inst. by R.E. Wimberly, Esq. Mr. William Methvin to Miss Cornelia A. Horne, daughter of Rev. William D. Horne, all of Twiggs County. Cornelia was born about 1838 in Georgia and after the death of William, who was over 30 years her elder, she married Lemuel Burkett, the son of Solomon and Charity Hyman Cain Burkett.

William Methvin was a farmer, and a rather prosperous one before the was as seen in the 1860 Twiggs County, Georgia census. 356th Dist. P. O. Marion, taken 9th of July pg 373.

William served in the Seminole Indian War of 1836. He was a member of the 37th Regiment Twiggs County Cavalry who enlisted on February 4, 1836. William died on July 30, 1869.

William and Cornelia Horne Methvin had the following children

1) Thomas Eugene Methvin (Dec 8, 1862-Jan 25, 1916), married Eugenia Carswell and had a) Merrill Methvin b) Thomas Eugene Methvin, Jr. (Aug 27, 1888-April 9, 1947), married Bertha Dunevant on May 5, 1920 in Twiggs Co. She was a librarian and a Home Demonstration Agent during World War I, helping teach people how to read and write. They had Thomas Eugene Methvin III (May 8, 1931-Oct 3, 1967). c) George William Methvin (April 17, 1890-Sept 26, 1964) married Florence H. Whitehurst on Sept 3, 1917. George served as Captain of the Twiggs County Defense Corps as reported in the Twiggs County New Era on November 15, 1940.

2) William Joseph Methvin (Nov 14, 1868-March 11, 1936) married Jennie Griffin and had a) Lucile Methvin (June 25, 1891-May 23, 1972) married Allen Kirby Smith on June 2, 1915) and b) Richard Eugene Methvin (Dec 15, 1892-Sep 13, 1968) married Dorothy Harvy on Dec 26, 1923 and had William J. Methvin.
